Make it an extra special Halloween party this year by whipping up some homemade Halloween treats for the kids. These sweet treats taste best when they come straight from Mom’s kitchen.
Caramel dipped apples are probably one of everyone’s autumn favorites. Start with 6 to 8 small Granny Smith Apples. The tartness of the apples adds a crisp crunch to the sweet caramel coating. Make the caramel by combining 1/2 cup each of brown and white sugar with 2 quarts heavy crème. Cook over medium heat until caramel mixture reaches 238 degrees F. Remove pan from stove and stir in 3 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons each of pure vanilla extract and marshmallow crème. Dip apples to coat.
Popcorn balls are definitely a hauntingly gooey delight. Pop 1 cup of popcorn kernels. Transfer the popped corn to a greased pan. Mix 1 cup each of molasses and light brown sugar with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a pan. Bring the mixture to a boil until a drop of the candy hardens in water. Pour over the popcorn and stir with a spoon until thoroughly mixed. Press the popcorn into balls using your hands. Wrap in color plastic wrap.
A huge bowlful of sweet kettle corn is another easy to prepare treat that kids love to eat. Add 1/2 cup unpopped corn kernels, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1/3 cup white sugar and 1-teaspoon salt to a large pot. Cover pot with a tightly fitting lid and pop over medium heat. Remove from heat when the popping begins to slow.
