scallopCooking scallops can be a task that many home cooks do not attempt. While scallops are fairly easy to prepare, knowing how long to cook scallops can be tricky. Whether sautied or pan-fried, the key is to cook them quickly so that they do not become rubbery. Start by patting the scallops dry with a paper towel. Season with a dash of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add one tablespoon each of olive oil and butter to a medium size skillet heated on medium-high. Use cooking tongs to place scallops into the pan one at a time. Cook scallops on one side for about 4 minutes. Gently flip over once with the tongs and cook for another minute. When scallops turn opaque, they are done.

Scallops can also be cooked by baking. Line the bottom of a casserole dish with aluminum foil. Brush lightly with olive oil before placing scallops in the baking dish. Bake in an oven preheated to 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 12 to 15 minutes. Scallops will turn white in color and should be firm when done. Some cooks choose to spoon a mixture of butter, wine and other seasonings over scallops before baking for added flavor.
