cookEven if you are counting calories this year, you can eat and enjoy a delicious low calorie Thanksgiving meal.

Eat the white meat from the breast of the turkey. It’s lower in fat. Use fat free milk in your mashed potatoes and whip with fat free sour cream instead of butter. Season with caramelized onions and coarse salt, freshly ground black pepper, and roasted garlic to taste.

If you can’t do without gravy on your potatoes, use chicken bouillon instead of turkey stock. Dissolve bouillon cubes in water. Thicken gravy with water and cornstarch rather than flour. Bake stuffing in a casserole dish instead of in the bird. Cornbread stuffing is a lower fat choice. Mix in some celery, onions, and green peppers to add flavor.

Serve a low calorie fresh salad as a side dish. Pass on the sweet, calorie laden candied yams recipes. Before baking, drizzle yams lightly with pure maple syrup to sweeten. Sprinkle with cinnamon and ground nutmeg for a delicious taste. Serve whole grain bread spread with sugar free jam in place of dinner rolls.
